The BID Foundation Leadership Network comes to Bristol, hosted by the City Centre BID, to experience the light festival in the city and focus on BIDs and the night time economy.

In the aftermath of COVID, leisure and the evening economy is an even more signficant aspect of successful towns and cities. With retail moving backwards - over 9,000 outlets have been lost since March 2020 - eating and drinking establishments have grown in number by 3.8% in the same period.

So, demand is clear, as visitors seek experiences during less frequent trips to centres, locally or on a short getaway. But obstacles remain; nightclubs are closing across the UK, resources prove difficult, and ensuring the public feel safe at night is a major challenge.

At the Leadership Network, we'll look at exemplars of the night time economy and hear from experts on what BIDs can do to support the night time sectors.

  • Jo Cox Brown has worked with towns and cities across the country to create safer more diverse areas after dark. She is passionate about night-time economy place management and is Fellow of the Institute of Place Management and a Member of the Institute of Licensing.

  • Ojay McDonald has been instrumental in understanding and benchmarking the evening economy, through his leadership of ATCM and its Purple Flag accreditation. He will share his practical and policy insights from working around the UK and beyond.

  • Vicky Lee is Head of Bristol City Centre BID, leading a range of projects and events which interact with and support the evening economy, in a location famous for the richness of its local arts culture. Vicky will share learnings from her experience with the Network, including leading a tour of the acclaimed Bristol Light Festival.

  • Prof Cathy Parker will again join the Network to provide her insight and findings from the Institute of Place Management on the state of the evening economy and its interaction with vital and viable places.

  • A Tour of Bristol Light Festival will follow the Leadership Network, including drinks and social event at the close of the tour.
