The Institute’s latest cohorts of postgraduate students will graduate from the IPM’s Place Management and Leadership programmes this month.
Following two years of study, the MSc students are one of the most successful groups to graduate from the course, with 13 students and 10 receiving merit or distinction. In addition, also graduating this year, one student is graduating with a PG Diploma, and three with a PG Certificate in Place Management and Leadership. The awards acknowledge the skills and experiences of these place professionals.
Although the graduation ceremony has been delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions, students can look forward to graduation in January 2022 at Manchester’s iconic Bridgewater Hall.
The group has achieved these fantastic results in spite of significant disruption to their studies caused by the pandemic. Students have had to undertake their final research-based dissertation hampered by restrictions and national lockdowns, which makes the achievement of completing their course even greater.
The student’s final dissertations covered a wide range of topics including Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), place-based strategies and visions, seaside towns, green space and well-being, with many projects discussing the effects of COVID-19 on places.
Reflecting on the progression of the students within the group, course leader, Dr Steve Millington said:
“It has been a pleasure teaching our students, guiding them through this journey and seeing them develop, unit by unit. The dissertation projects recently submitted were completed to a particularly high standard and the work shows how far each individual has come.”
The IPM Place Management and Leadership courses provide practitioners with invaluable insight, the opportunity to learn about new approaches in the sector, and to strengthen underpinning knowledge through exposure to academic research. The aim of our qualifications is to develop confident, respected place managers, capable of strategic thinking and transformative but inclusive place management.
In addition to our cohort of students graduating, we have more than 25 students at various stages of their postgraduate studies in Place Management and Leadership. Students are currently being taught online via Zoom or Microsoft Teams, rather than attending quarterly in-person residential sessions in Manchester.
We are set to start recruiting for the next cohort of students starting in January 2022 in the coming months, if you are interested in studying with us, please click here to fill out a short interest form.
