IPM Director commissioned to develop a framework for citizen participation in spatial development
IPM Director Professor Ares Kalandides has been commissioned with the development of a framework for citizen participation in spatial development for the Berlin borough of Spandau. It consists of two parts: a first development phase, in which the framework will be designed together with administration officers, social society organisations and citizens; and a second, implementation phase until the end of 2021, where the framework will be tested and amended. The output from this project will directly inform research on co-creating places, which is one of the research focusses at the Institute for 2021.
Throughout 2020, Ares led a series of webinars exploring the concept of Citizen Participation; guest speakers included Phil Prentice, Vidhya Alakeson, Laura Sanderson, Mark Hammond, Charles Campion and Eleanor Radcliffe. Ares also led a parallel series in Greek, both series explored various case studies and debates on participation processes and best practice, community empowerment and engagement and challenges of implementing and embedding effective engagement in the Place Management sector. IPM has a set research strategy for 2021, which features four separate clusters; co-creating place, experiencing place, time and place and 'other' places which will feed into the institutes overall activity for this year. These research clusters will form an essential part of our Biennial conference “Place Leadership in a post-pandemic world” scheduled for September 2021.
Starting in March 2021, Ares will lead a further 2-part webinar series, as well as a 4-park Greek series, exploring the concept as related terms such as “community engagement” further, keep an eye out for further announcements.
